You're So Vain...How To Write An About Page
You probably think this page is about you. Well, if truth be told, it kind of is and also kind of isn’t. But read on if you want to get tips on how to write an About page that people will actually want to read.
When I built my own website, it was this page that gave me the biggest headache. It felt like I was writing a cross between a lonely hearts ad and a CV cover letter. Read dating app profile and LinkedIn summary you Millenials out there.
I’m an introvert, so writing or talking about myself or anything that will say to people ‘hey, look at me’ makes me cringe. I hate being the centre of attention. You will not find become famous (Insta or otherwise), be on the stage or present a motivational speech on my bucket list.
So you can appreciate my challenge to come up with words to fill this page.
After some trial and error and an important flip of mindset, I landed on something I'm happy with. I say happy. Who is ever happy with their own writing? Copywriters included.
Here are my tips on how to write an About page. They might help next time you have to come up with one:
Write in your style.
This is the place to show your writing personality. You are showcasing your brand, so if you are cheeky - bring it on. Professional? Then it’s ok to keep it strictly business. The most important thing is to be you.
Make it about the reader.
This was a game-changer for me. Once I decided to make it about my client, it was a whole lot easier. Reiterate how you understand them, how you help them and how you will change their life.
Make it easy to find.
By entitling your page 'About'. No-one’s got time to hunt around your site in search of it. Save the clever naming conventions for other things.
List your credentials and experience.
Or include a link to your LinkedIn profile if the reader wants more detail.
Be the right amount of funny.
If you are on the humorous side, try removing around 50% of the jokes to balance.
Finally, be interesting.
But not contrived. Like you are at parties (remember those?). That sweet spot between the first two hours where you’re warming up and singing Bohemian Rhapsody while standing on your best friend’s dining room table. Clearly, that’s never me because I’m an introvert, but you get the picture…
